Facts to Know Before You Undergo Liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure in which fat is liquefied and is suctioned from specific areas of the body. The goal of this procedure is to reshape and redefine body areas that are not responding to diet and exercise, and is not considered as part of weight loss surgery. The most common areas of liposuction are the abdomen, flanks, hips, and thighs. The ideal candidates are patients who are at or near their ideal weight and who are not obese. An ideal liposuction candidate should also have good skin elasticity and muscle tone, nonsmoker, in good health and with realistic expectations. . The procedure is contra indicated for patients with morbid obesity, advanced age, patients on blood thinning medications and chronic smokers. The potential complications for Liposuction are- excessive bleeding or hematoma/ clot formation , persistent swelling or pain, asymmetry, Deep vein thrombosis , Fat embolism -when fat goes into the bloodstream and lodges in blood vessels)

During liposuction, small incisions, typically about 5mm, are made a, hidden as much as possible near the area being treated. Those incisions are then used to insert a thin tube called “cannula “under the skin. The cannula is connected to a vacuum device that suctions out fat deposits through motion and back-and-forth passes under the skin.

After surgery, patients wear compression garments on the treated areas for 4-6 weeks to facilitate proper healing. The garments help to minimize the swelling and inflammation while allowing the skin to retract. Post-operative physiotherapy massage to help you heal faster can help the drainage of fluid (lymph) accumulated in the treated areas, , which will help you to reduce the swelling and prevents excess scar formation.
